Stop Telemarketers
The National Do Not Call Registry was created to stop telemarketers from
calling you. People who sign up should see a decrease in
telemarketing calls. This site is here to educate you about the registry.
The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) created the registry to prevent
unwanted telemarketing calls from consumers. The registry was created
because of the demands of individuals tired of getting calls from telemarketers.
The rules make it so that any telemarketer who calls a number on the registry
will be fined. The fine keeps telemarketing firms from calling individuals
listed in the registry.
When does it take effect?
The FTC allows upto 3 months for telemarketing firms to apply the new
registrants from the National Do Not Call List. This means you will have
a drop off of telemarketing calls and then at 3 months telemarketers should
not be calling you.
How does the National Do Not Call Registry work?
You submit your phone number to the registry then telemarketing firms
are required to search the registry and unlist the number from their
databases. They are required to synchronize their database with the
registry every 3 months. Your number will be listed in the registry
for 5 years. If a telemarket calls you after you have sign up for the
registry and it has been over 3 months since you signed up then they
could be fined up to $11,000 for each call. Then you can file a complaint
with the National Do Not Call Registry. You will need a phone number
or name of the company breaking the rules of the National Do Not Call
Registry. Telemarketing firms use do not call software to comply with
the Registries.
Will the National Do Not Call Registry stop all telemarketing calls?
Registering on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop
most telemarketing calls, but not all. There are exceptions to the
law. A few examples are long distance phone companies, charities, banks,
airlines and politicians. Telemarketing service can call on behalf of
these institutions.
What if I want certain companys to telemarket me?
After registering on the National Do Not Call Registry you must give
written permission to companies that you want to be marketed to.
Telemarketing firms that have permission will then add you to their call
list.
What if my state has a do not call list?
There are 26 states with do not call lists like New Jersey. These do
not call lists were transfered over during the start of the National Do
Not Call Registry. If you did not register with your state's do not call
list or live in a state that does not offer a do not call list then you
must register on the National Do Not Call List. National telemarketers
will then use the National Registry to scrub their lists.
How can I put my number on the National Do Not Call Registry?
There are 2 ways to register, by phone (888) 382-1222 or
online.
